Open power pack: connect hydraulics to other machines
 
Hong Kong is extending the east section of the South Island Metro Line. Most of the sections including the stations will be underground, but some segments will be on a viaduct. A new bridge alongside the Ap Lei Chau Bridge (鸭脷洲大桥) will also be built. The ICE power pack was used for the construction of the foundation of this bridge.
 
As the river is busy with boat traffic the new bridge is built from the river bank, placing limits on the type of machinery that can be used. The client needed a light hammer for this job that could extend 20 meters into the river from shore. Using the 4.4 ton ICE 416L hammer would require a crane with much greater counter weights. Therefore the client chose a modified Starke SV-40 hammer (weight 1 ton) with modified ICE 400pp with a 60 ton crane to drive the 12m sheet piles to depth.
 
ICE power packs are designed as open loop systems that enable the hydraulic power station to be used for other auxiliary machinery, such as in this case a hammer produced by Starke. The power packs are also widely used for IHC hammers and can also provide hydraulic power to augers and oscillators. ICE has chosen an open loop system as it has fewer hydraulic components and hoses than a closed loop system, and is therefore less sensitive to malfunctions. Open loop systems have the added benefit of working with a low pressure return line (5-10 bar) thus enabling a lower working pressure for the hammer (at 350 bar). The hydraulic oil is cooled during circulation, ensuring the hammer stays within operating temperature and needs no cooling periods during the job.
