This video of the ICE 815D vibratory hammer driving steel tubes is another good example of how re-usable steel foundations are used in Shanghai for the upgrade of the S4 Elevated Highway. For the duration of the upgrade, traffic will be rerouted over steel frame overpasses along side the original road deck. The temporary foundation of the overpass consists of 36m long 700mm diameter casings. Construction equipment needs are limited to crane, vibratory hammer and excavator for site preparation. No concrete is used for the bypass. Construction speeds are high and disturbance to the environment are minimal.
